Relief from Sciatica, Lower Back Pain & Disc Problems — Without Surgery or Injections

At Stow Family Chiropractic, we help patients throughout Stow, Maynard, and Acton find lasting relief using non-surgical spinal decompression — a gentle, technology-driven treatment that addresses the root cause of your pain.

If you're dealing with disc pain, sciatica, or radiating arm or leg pain, you may feel like surgery is your only option. It's not.

Spinal decompression offers a non-invasive approach designed to reduce pressure on damaged discs and promote natural healing.

Struggling with Sciatica? There’s a Non-Surgical Option.

Sciatica — the sharp, shooting pain that travels from your low back through your hip and down your leg — is usually caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve. That pressure most often comes from a herniated or bulging disc compressing the nerve root.

Spinal decompression works by gently creating negative pressure inside the disc, which helps reduce nerve compression and allows the disc to begin healing naturally — without injections, without surgery, and without medication.

Many of our patients come to us after months of trying other approaches — physical therapy, chiropractic, pain medication — without lasting relief. If sciatic pain is affecting your daily life, we’d like to help you find out if decompression is right for you.

Chronic Lower Back Pain? We Treat the Root Cause.

Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people visit our practice — and one of the most mismanaged conditions in mainstream medicine. Pain pills mask symptoms. Injections offer temporary relief. Surgery carries significant risk and recovery time.

When lower back pain is caused or worsened by disc problems — herniated discs, bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, or spinal stenosis — spinal decompression can target the underlying cause directly. By gently unloading the spine, decompression creates the conditions your body needs to heal.

Every treatment plan at Stow Family Chiropractic begins with a clinical evaluation. We only recommend decompression when we believe it’s the right fit for your specific condition — and we’ll tell you honestly if something else is a better option.

Herniated, Bulging, or Slipped Disc? Non-Surgical Relief Is Possible.

A herniated disc, bulging disc, or slipped disc can cause pain that radiates into your arms or legs, numbness, tingling, and significant limitations in daily activity. For many patients, the natural next step seems to be injections or surgery — but there’s often a better option.

Spinal decompression gently stretches the spine to reduce disc pressure and encourage the disc to rehydrate and reposition. Our KDT Neural Flex table allows us to customize each session to your anatomy and condition — treatment is comfortable, controlled, and drug-free.

In Spring 2025, I was suffering from severe neck, shoulder, and back pain, which was contributing to weakness in my legs, forearms, and hands. Given this, I got an MRI, and I visited with an orthopedic and spine specialist who diagnosed me with cervical spinal stenosis leading to significant compression of several cervical vertebrae (C2-C6). The specialist recommended immediate Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) surgery.  Given the severity of the diagnoses and the risk inherent in any surgery, particularly spinal surgery, I got a second opinion from Dr. Whittemore, who recommended decompression treatment as a viable alternative.

I started decompression treatment soon after discussing the treatment plan with Dr. Whittemore and experienced almost immediate symptomatic relief. While the pain in my neck, shoulder, and back did not disappear altogether, I noticed continuous improvement with each decompression session. This improvement allowed me to get back into the gym, and on the golf course, to recover the strength in my limbs and continue my life at a quality level I was accustomed to prior to experiencing the pain that caused me to seek treatment in the first place.

I had been struggling for almost a year with extreme lumbar and hip pain due to 5 bulging discs caused by Degenerative Disc Disease and Osteoporosis in my spine.  My range of motion was poor and I was experiencing chronic daily pain.  I received Facet Injections through my primary care provider who suggested my next step would be L3 Nerve Ablation.  It was at this point in time that I sought the care of Dr. Whittemore.  He assessed my situation and created a tailored treatment plan of Therapeutic Laser and Decompression Therapy.  After the first 12-visit reassessment, I felt remarkable results.  Not only was I feeling improvement, but I could see the results on paper from my surfaceEMG.

After another 12-visit reassessment, I continued to see more remarkable results.  It’s been 6 months and I feel that Decompression Therapy has been critical in improving my range of motion and decreasing my chronic pain.  I would highly recommend Dr. Whittemore and Decompression Therapy, it has truly provided me tremendous relief.

If you're looking to improve your quality of life related to spine and foot pain, I highly recommend Stow Family Chiropractic. After 30 years of work sitting at a desk, I was unable to walk more than 5 minutes and stay busy all day once retired. Dr Todd, recommended orthotics and decompression therapy. After 6 months time, I am able to workout and do all of my desired activities. Dr Todd looks at the entire mechanics of the body including xRAYS, an integrated approach to healing. The staff is also amazing. My thanks to all of the Stow Chiropractic family!

After a serious car accident, I was in a tremendous amount of pain. The kind of pain that affects sleep, my mood and overall ability to function as a mother to two young children. An MRI disclosed multiple disc issues and the spine specialists suggested surgery as my best bet for treatment. Dr. Todd provided a life changing alternative, decompression therapy.

1-2 treatments per week provided relief I was not seeing from any other therapies (Acupuncture, diet changes or pain relief medicine). My only wish is that I started it sooner. I highly recommend this option for those who are seeking relief without going the surgical route. Thank you Dr. Todd & staff!

I have been a patient of Dr. Todd’s at Stow Family Chiropractic since December 2021. I was experiencing back pain for 3-4 years due to a lumbar disc bulge and spinal stenosis and it was affecting my day-to-day work and social life. I am a carpenter and have a labor-intensive job and after trying a couple of rounds of cortisone shots, nothing was reducing the pain enough that I could work pain-free. I was ready to schedule an appointment with the surgeon before my wife convinced me to try decompression therapy.  I completed 3 rounds of 12 decompression sessions and can honestly say I am almost in no pain. I’ve now returned to daily walking, exercise and working at full capacity. I am currently seeing Dr. Todd twice a week for laser therapy and adjustments and am happy to say that I am feeling much better and avoided surgery.  I highly recommend decompression therapy!

What is Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Spinal decompression is a non-surgical treatment designed to relieve pressure on herniated, bulging, or degenerating discs.

Using gentle, computer-controlled traction, the treatment creates negative pressure within the disc. This can help:

• Reduce nerve compression
• Improve disc hydration
• Decrease inflammation
• Support natural healing

Treatments are comfortable and typically last 8–16 minutes.

Advanced Technology + Customized Care

At Stow Family Chiropractic, decompression is delivered using the KDT Neural Flex Spinal Decompression Table, allowing precise, controlled treatment tailored to your condition.

Every session also includes cold laser therapy, which helps:

• Support faster recovery

Your treatment plan is customized based on your symptoms, exam findings, and clinical evaluation.
