Benefits of Decompression Therapy

  • Decreases pain
  • Enhances recovery/healing process
  • Non-invasive
  • Decreases pressure on spinal discs and joints
  • Spinal decompression also reduces the need for surgery, or prevents surgery as a result of an effective treatment plan.

What is Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Spinal Decompression Therapy (SDT) is a non-surgical procedure that effectively treats lower back pain and neck pain due to various causes including spinal disc conditions, injury, obesity, inactivity or over-taxing of the cervical and lumbar muscles. Decompression therapy uses gentle intermittent digitally controlled distraction (stretching) which unloads and separates the joints of the spine, resulting in reduced pressure on spinal discs and facet joints.

Utilizing the KDT Neural Flex Spinal Decompression Table, the SDT treatment begins with a series of sessions typically 3 times per week. Each session is approximately 8-16 minutes. In addition, cold laser therapy is applied as well to help reduce inflammation, enhance pain reduction, and promote further healing of injured tissues.

In short, spinal decompression effectively enhances the healing process and therefore renders quick, effective pain relief that enables most patients to return to a more active lifestyle as a result. Lastly, research to develop this procedure was conducted by prominent physicians, engineers and technicians at major teaching hospitals.

Spinal Decompression: Frequently Asked Questions

Does spinal decompression hurt?

Most people find spinal decompression comfortable, and many find it relaxing. The therapy uses gentle, computer-controlled stretching, and you stay fully clothed on the table. Sessions are short — about 8 to 16 minutes — and many patients simply rest during treatment.

How many spinal decompression sessions will I need?

A typical plan begins with sessions about three times per week, with the total number depending on your condition and how you respond. Dr. Todd reviews your evaluation and explains a recommended plan before you begin, so you always know what to expect.

How much does spinal decompression cost, and is it covered by insurance?

Spinal decompression is not covered by health insurance and is paid out of pocket. Individual sessions are $155, and a discounted package of 12 treatments is available for $1,674. You do not need to be an existing chiropractic patient to receive decompression treatments. While decompression itself is not covered, Stow Family Chiropractic accepts insurance for chiropractic care, and our team is happy to explain your options.

Who is a good candidate for spinal decompression, and who isn't?

Spinal decompression is often a good fit for people with disc-related pain such as herniated or bulging discs, sciatica, or spinal stenosis. It is not appropriate for everyone — for example, it is not recommended during pregnancy. Dr. Todd evaluates your condition first, including digital X-rays when appropriate, to determine whether decompression is right for you or whether another approach would serve you better.

How is spinal decompression different from a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment restores motion to the joints of the spine. Spinal decompression is a separate, non-surgical therapy that gently stretches the spine to reduce pressure on the discs and the nerves around them. They work well together, and many patients receive both as part of a coordinated care plan.

What conditions can spinal decompression help with?

Spinal decompression is used for disc-related and nerve-related pain, including herniated and bulging discs, sciatica, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and pinched nerves. It is often considered as a non-surgical option for lower back pain and neck pain.
